ABOUT UCI ROAD WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS

The UCI Road World Championship is one of the major sporting events. During 8 days of competition in the second half of September, a total of 12 competitions are held.  About 1000 athletes, 5000 officials and guests as well as 700 media professionals take part at this event. A total of 700,000 visitors are expected during the Championships.

CYCLING ON THE AGENDA
Switzerland will host the Road World Championships for cycling twice in the next decade and only four years apart, in 2020 and 2024.

The UCI thanked Swiss Cycling for taking on the 2020 event, which had been rejected by the Netherlands and Italy.

For the 2024 event, the cities of Zurich and Bern applied to host the World Championships. On behalf of the City of Bern, a lean and powerful organization developed a strong concept for the 2024 UCI Road & Para-Cycling World Championship.

qiip was part of the team and responsible for planning the required infrastructure as well as organizing the logistics. A technical optimized concept was worked out with a detailed planning of the race track, start and finish areas as well as a cost estimate elaborated. Furthermore, qiip developed realistic concepts with regards to sustainability and legacy.

For the first time in the history of the World Cycling Championships, competitions for athletes with disabilities have also been integrated into the concept, partly on the same routes as the other athletes. The joint racing program provided added value for the public and a great deal of media attention for para-cycling.

Despite this strong concept, Swiss Cycling awarded the 2024 World Cycling Road Championships to Zurich in March 2019, for the fourth time after 1923, 1929 and 1946.
