Despite multi-government support, the Canton of Valais said no to the Games
The final result of the June 10 referendum on the Sion2026 bid was a clear, painfully disappointing, no from the people of the Canton of Valais. This marks the fourth time that a Swiss winter bid fails to get the nod.
Outdated information on the costs of the Games was likely a main concern, which the campaign to build support for a June 10 yes was not able to alleviate. Despite pledges of government support, including those of other involved cantons, $1 billion federal funds, $100 million from the canton, the efforts fell short.
The news of a multi-million dollar surplus resulting from PyeongChang 2018, showcasing the
positive effects of the Olympic Agenda 2020, emerged just days after the vote in Switzerland.
